Energy efficiency requirements have become an increasingly important part of residential construction. Building departments enforce specific energy codes, and depending on the scope of the project, compliance may require calculations, documentation, ratings, and third-party testing.

Sturdy Homes works with architects, builders, and homeowners to identify and complete the energy compliance requirements for new construction, additions, renovations, and remodels. From HERS Ratings and Manual J, S + D calculations to REScheck, Blower Door Testing, and Duct Leakage Testing, we help make sure the necessary pieces are addressed at the right stages of the project.

Getting us involved early can help prevent costly mistakes, missing documentation, failed testing, and delays later in construction. If you’re unsure what your plans or building department require, reach out, we’ll help you figure it out.

Blower Door Test

Sturdy Homes Corp's Energy (HERS) Rating service is the gold standard when it comes to assessing the energy efficiency of homes. Our team of experts conducts pre-drywall inspections, blower door tests, and duct blaster tests to ensure your home is not only energy-efficient but also comfortable and healthy. During the pre-drywall inspection, we verify that all insulation, windows, and doors are installed according to manufacturer recommendations and best practices.

The blower door test allows us to detect any air leaks in the building envelope that can lead to energy waste and lower indoor air quality. Finally, the duct blaster test enables us to measure the efficiency of your HVAC system and identify any leaks or inefficiencies.

Our HERS Rating service is the key to achieving lower energy bills, improved indoor air quality and comfort, and higher resale value for your Long Island home.

What is a Manual J?

  • Simply put, a Manual J is a report that determines how powerful your Heating and Cooling systems should be, based on what your renovated or new home will need.

  • This ensures your HVAC system addresses your heating and cooling requirements efficiently, avoiding unnecessary waste.

Required by Code

  • Completing the Manual J is a code requirement in most cases, essential for ensuring your project meets compliance standards.

  • Depending on your specific town code, the building department may also request a Manual S and Manual D.

  • These reports build upon the Manual I by selecting suitable equipment and designing an efficient duct system.

What is needed

To complete the manuals, an Energy Rater or HVAC engineer requires the project's proposed plans and specific details, such as the type of heating and cooling system you plan to install.

REScheck

Energy Code Documentation for New Construction, Additions + Renovations

Documenting Your Project’s Energy Code Compliance. REScheck uses information from proposed plans and specifications - including insulation, windows, doors, walls, roof and ceiling assemblies, and other components of the building envelope - to determine whether a residential project meets applicable energy-efficiency requirements.

Projects may also need to meet specific Credits for Energy Efficiency, which can be influenced by HVAC equipment, water heating, air leakage, ductwork, and other energy-efficiency measures.

That’s where planning ahead matters. Sturdy Homes works with architects, builders, and homeowners to prepare REScheck documentation, identify requirements, and develop a practical path toward compliance, helping prevent last-minute changes, application delays, and unnecessary headaches.

Not sure if you need a REScheck or what your project requires? Feel free to reach out. We’ll review what you’re working on and help determine the next steps.
